Following comprehensive assessment and goal setting with you, we develop an individualised and specific program to directly address pain, muscle imbalance, weakness, postural issues, balance problems and other functional deficits. Our techniques aim to directly treat the underlying pathology. We utilise a range of mat and equipment based exercises and develop a targeted home program to accelerate your progress. Our focus is always to teach you safe, correct and effective exercise technique. We maintain detailed records of your progress and regularly review progress and your goals. We offer individual or small group programs.
Clinical Pilates Classes
At Theraspace we offer small group classes, with up to 4 participants per class. Each participant is guided and progressed through their individual program during the class. Classes run for 45 minutes and we offer morning, evening and Saturday classes.
Our dynamic Rehabilitation approach incorporates a range manual “hands-on”, therapies, active exercise, education and self management strategies to maximise your well-being and level of functioning. We focus on evidence based practice to manage troublesome episodes of back pain, following joint replacement surgery, spinal surgery and with managing longer term health conditions such as arthritis, ongoing spinal pain, MS, balance disorders and Diabetes.
We work in partnership with you, your referring specialists and GP to support you in your journey through treatment and return to well-being. Early stage treatment includes gentle manual treatment to address soft tissue complications from surgery and radiation therapy such as cording and scar contractures. When you are ready to return to active exercise we can assist you with setting up an exercise program that is ideal for you. We aim to promote greater quality of life and very importantly improve longer term health outcomes.
For pain that is persistent, and often resistent to more traditional and “hands-on” treatment such as massage and manipulation, extensive research supports a “hands-off” approach to managing the pain and can often incorporate a number of practitioners working with you. The aim is to support you to control and manage your pain using a wide range of physical and cognitive strategies.
As part of our services at Theraspace, we work in conjunction with your other treating practitioners to reinforce your learning and practical skills in managing your pain. There is a focus on appropriate levels of exercise including the Clinical Pilates repertoire, pacing techniques and the incorporation of breathing and relaxation techniques into the sessions. We also work with you to develop a long term exercise and fitness program that supports a healthy lifestyle and promotes the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers.
Aquatic Physiotherapy, also known as Hydrotherapy, uses the properties of water to effectively treat a range of conditions. Hydrotherapy is effective for pain management, arthritis, back and neck pain, rehabilitation following orthopaedic surgery including hip and knee replacement surgery, trauma and sports injury. The properties of the water allow for greater ease and versatility with exercise. Hydrotherapy can be used to strengthen muscles, promote core stability, mobilise joints, relieve pain, promote relaxation and also provides another avenue for increasing general fitness and balance.
Antenatal and Postnatal Pilates
Individual and class work focuses on correct training of the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles during pregnancy and after the birth of your child. Attention is paid to your changing posture, and safe positions for exercise to avoid overstraining your back and abdominal wall. Pelvic instability and continence issues are also addressed.
Superficial and deep dry needling techniques are effective in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain associated with trigger points within muscles. Acupuncture needles are used to stimulate the body’s own pain relief system. They are inserted into the skin and subcutaneous tissues immediately overlying a myofascial trigger point, which releases the trigger point. This release improves muscle length and reduces pain. Dry needling also aids relaxation and improves sleep quality. Dry needling is an effective treatment option for acute and chronic pain. At Theraspace, dry needling is used, when needed, as part of an overall comprehensive physiotherapy treatment.
